The Importance of Hydration

Maintaining proper hydration gives your body the support it needs to fight illness and maintain bodily functions that promote health and well-being. At Marsh Chiropractic and Wellness Center, Dr. Scott Marsh educates his patients about the importance of hydrating before and after chiropractic care in Maryville, TN, maintaining proper hydration while working out, and how dehydration affects your body.

Why You Should Hydrate Before and After a Visit to the Chiropractor

Hydrating before a chiropractic adjustment allows your body to maintain all of the functions necessary for movement, health, and wellness. During a chiropractic adjustment, your body releases toxins that were stored in your tissues and muscles. Hydrating after a chiropractic adjustment with Dr. Marsh ensures your body can properly flush these toxins out of your system. Water also provides necessary lubrication for your joints and prevents joints and muscles from becoming stiff.

Maintaining Hydration During Workouts

Hydrating before, during, and after a workout can make your workout more effective and can help you avoid injury, dehydration, and heat illness. Dehydration can cause muscle cramps, muscle sprains and strains, nerve damage, and other problems during recovery. The amount of water you drink during a workout depends on the length of your workout, your age and weight, where you are working out, and your overall health. In general, you should drink 16-24 ounces of water each hour. If you are exercising outside, you should drink a sports drink to replace electrolytes. After your workout, you should drink at least 16 ounces of water each hour for two- or three-hours post-workout.

The Dangers of Dehydration

Dehydration can cause muscle degradation and affect your recovery from a workout or chiropractic adjustment. Dehydration can affect every part of your body and every bodily function. Mild dehydration can cause arrhythmia, low blood pressure, and sudden changes in body temperature. Severe dehydration can cause muscle weakness, confusion, dizziness, disorientation, seizures, low blood pressure, low heart rate, organ damage, shock, and even death. Chronic dehydration can increase your risk of kidney stones and kidney damage, and can cause constipation, gastrointestinal issues, muscle cramps, and brain and organ damage.
